The History of Sanderstead Hockey Club

The origins of Sanderstead Hockey Club go back to 1947, when Geoffrey Eastop, the well-known potter, was studying his craft at Croydon Art School.  He started the school's mixed hockey club, which played its matches at Sanderstead cricket ground.  But the running of the club was soon taken over by Rita Campling (née Wells) and Harley Sherlock.  By 1958 the club had lost its links with the Art School, and had become Sanderstead's (Men's) Hockey Club:  running three teams, with Harley Sherlock skippering the First XI until 1969.

In the early days the forward line was dominated by Tony Lycett and Derek Taylor, who went on to become county players;  while the defence was in the capable hands of Colin Mackay (now a High Court judge!) and John Berkley.

After the loss of its 1960s stars, the club was successfully rebuilt by skippers Tony Day and Alan Hitchmough, with the assistance of prolific goal-scorers Patrick Taylor and John Proctor, who are still stalwarts of the club as Chairman and Secretary respectively.

The club now runs five XIs, and is ably led by First XI skipper, Martyn Avery.
